In order to support terminal patients and their families to receive quality hospice and palliative care, Kiang Wu Nursing College of Macau (KWNC) organised a 13-member team comprising students, staff and family members to participate in the 32nd ‘Hiking for Good’ charity event in Hong Kong on 16th February 2025. The event was organised by The Society for the Promotion of Hospice Care (Hong Kong) to promote life and death education and to raise funds for hospice palliative care services.

“Hiking for Good‘’ symbolises the journey of life, in which participants experience the resilience and value of life as they challenge the ups and downs of the mountain paths. The event not only allows participants to enjoy the fun of nature, but also takes practical actions to support terminally-ill patients and their families, ensuring that they have access to quality hospice and palliative care as well as gender-sensitive counselling services, regardless of wealth. Through this event, the Society hopes to promote life and death education so that more people can learn about the meaning of life and support related charitable causes.

The event attracted participants from different regions, and KWNC, as an important nursing education institution in Macao, this cross-border participation was even more meaningful. The College's team took on 4km, 14km and 20km routes respectively, starting from Tai Tam Country Park in Hong Kong and passing through landmarks such as Wilson's Trail, Violet Hill, Mount Parker's Hill, Pony Hill and Jardine's Lookout. Despite the rugged terrain and challenges along the route, each step of the way was marked by the firm support for the dignity of life, which fully demonstrated the practice and inheritance of nursing professionalism. In the end, all members of the College successfully completed the challenge, demonstrating the nursing profession's respect for and protection of the value of life.

Participating teachers and students expressed that they were honoured and touched to be able to take part in such an activity which combined challenge and charity. Although the process was difficult, every step was full of meaning, symbolising the respect and support for life. The event was not only a challenge of physical strength and perseverance, but also a spiritual cleansing and growth.

Kiang Wu Nursing College of Macau has taken practical actions to convey positive energy to the society and demonstrated its commitment to life care and public welfare. In the future, the College will continue to uphold the spirit of nursing profession and actively participate in various public welfare activities, contributing to the promotion of social progress and harmony.
