A survey on care burden of family caregivers during the COVID-19 pandemic in Macao

Abstract:
Background: The first COVID-19 case was confirmed in Macao on January 22, 2020. By February 4, 2020, Macao had reported 10 cases. The government implemented a series of measures to prevent the new infectious disease from further spreading. As a result, the local businesses and government services were suspended, and schools were closed. These changes induced changes to family care. Objective: This study was to investigate the care burden of family caregivers during the COVID-19 pandemic in Macao. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted. The targeted population of the study was family members who needed to take care of minors and/or the family members elderly. An online survey was implemented. Altogether, 1,736 respondents who claimed to be family caregivers participated in the study. Results: Females accounted for 89.8% of respondents. Around 71.4% of the respondents were responsible to take care of children; 30.7% of them were responsible to take care of elderly. About 22.4% had to take care of both children and elderly. Among the caregivers who had school-aged children, 52.3% of them had to spend one to two hours a day accompanying their children on school assignments, with those who had children in primary schools spending more time. In addition, the caregivers who had children in primary schools expressed more care burden and were more likely to have conflicts with children and other family members. Conclusion: Measures taken during the outbreak resulted in reduced care support from the society, leaving care burden to family caregivers. When the local government disseminates information on the infections of the disease, it should provide information on the ways to alleviate anxiety and counselling services for the local families who confine their life inside the household as well.
